An Extreme-ly Challenging Timeline

To bring the Hawkins family's dream home to life, Capitol Homes and the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition team created a small city around the remains of the Hawkins home -- one that operated 24 hours a day between July 28 and until August 4, when the family returned and Ty delivered his famous line, "Driver, Move That Bus!"

An army of nearly 2,000 construction workers, plus hundreds of Extreme Makeover technicians and producers were organized, equipped, transported and fed throughout the four-day "build" period. Dozens of Middle Tennessee businesses agreed to donate everything from construction materials to tents and meals. "We are humbled and honored by the outpouring of support and the spirit of cooperation," Luecke says. "Everyone we've asked stepped up, and many of these companies went above and beyond to make this an extra-special event for the Hawkins family."

While Pennington's crew and volunteers from Capitol Homes transformed the Hawkins' life with a new home and a fresh start, the family went on vacation to Walt Disney World. It was a welcome change for the family that has not only endured the loss of their home and of mom Amy's mobility, but also the pain of being separated for three months as Amy underwent extensive rehab therapy at a spinal cord injury center in Atlanta, returning to Hendersonville in July.
